Super Bowl 2011 and Joe Montana’s First Super Bowl

“For me, winning isn't something that happens suddenly on the field when the whistle blows and the crowds roar.
Winning is something that builds physically and mentally every day that you train and every night that you dream.”
Emmitt Smith

Super Bowl XLV will be played in Dallas this year. The 2011 Super Bowl teams are the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  It will be the big sports event of the year in Dallas.  And yes, people will be hypnotized by watching the game live, or on TV.

So what do you think? Will Ben Roethlisberger get his third Super Bowl Ring, or will his off the field personal problems from earlier this year in any way be a distraction for him? Or will Aaron Rodgers with his laser precise arm be winning his first?

And when did either of them win their very First Super Bowl? You’re probably thinking, wait a minute, Rodgers hasn’t won his first yet. Really? You think he hasn’t?  I’ll give you a hint, it has something to do with hypnosis!

For some reason, it got me to thinking about one of the great athletes of all time -- Joe Montana. So here’s a question for you. Do you know how old Joe Montana was when he won his first Super Bowl?

Did Coach McCarthy Hypnotize the Super Bowl Green Bay Packers?

You may have heard that the night before the Super Bowl game against the Steelers, Coach McCarthy had his Packers measured for championship rings at the team hotel. "He handed out scales, high-end expensive scales. He said to us, 'I'm leaving you with this token. Remember my approach: You need to balance your life between family and work.' I'll never forget it. The scale is the centerpiece of my den." said Mike McCarthy, referring to Dave Checketts former CEO of Madison Square Gardens, a longtime friend and colleague.

Did NFL Coach Mike McCarthy use some form of Sports Hypnosis / NLP with the Green Bay Packers football Players the day before the Super Bowl? Yes, he did!

My guess is, he didn’t tell the athletes on the Team – “I’m going to Hypnotize you now. Take in a nice deep breath, and let it out nice and slow.”

But he did use a very effective Hypnosis / NLP tool with them, whether he knew he did, or the football Players knew he did or not.

What am I talking about here? You may have heard that the night before the Super Bowl game against the Steelers, Coach McCarthy had his Packers measured for championship rings at the team hotel.

It’s been pointed out by General Manager Ted Thompson they would have gotten an NFC Championship ring even if they had lost, but that’s not the point.

Would their ring size (not the size of the ring) be different if they had lost? No, but when you tell a Player he’s being measured for his Super Bowl ring, it makes a big difference – especially since it is BEFORE the game is played.

You’re probably still wondering how the Hypnosis part comes in.

Here it is ...

The Super “Hypnosis” Bowl -- the Ultimate Mass Hypnosis

Super Bowl XLV is now in the history books. And you just got through watching the Ultimate Mass Hypnosis event of the year – until the next Super Bowl anyway.
“The truth is the Super Bowl long ago became more than just a football game. It's part of our culture like turkey at Thanksgiving and lights at Christmas, and like those holidays beyond their meaning, a factor in our economy.”

Bob Schieffer

Congratulations to Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers for the Super Bowl Win and to both the Packers and the Steelers for giving it their all. Celebrations and heartaches for the athletes and fans – depending on which locker room and sports fans you want to ask.

Super Bowl XLV is now in the history books. And you just got through watching the Ultimate Mass Hypnosis event of the year – until the next Super Bowl anyway.

But who really won? The number ONE WINNER – Fox. They cashed a lot of checks from sponsors. The other winners – besides the teams -- the ad agencies that put together the commercials.   And of course all the fans who watched here in Dallas / Fort Worth, or had their Super Bowl parties at home!

What did you think of the commercials? You couldn’t help notice the Hyundai commercials with the obvious references to Hypnosis. Naturally as a Hypnotist specializing in Sports Hypnosis I enjoyed that one.

But here’s a question for you – how many people do you think were Hypnotized during the game? What? You think I’m suggesting that some people went to a Hypnotist for a session instead of watching the game? No!

Three Little Words that Keep an Athlete from Confident Sports Performance

"The significant
problems we face
cannot be solved
at the same level
of thinking
we were at
when we
created them."

Albert Einstein

It amazes me how many athletes call me to discuss Sports Hypnosis and the conversation starts off with, “Coach, my problem is.” Or “Coach, I have a problem!”
It doesn’t matter whether it's’ for golf, tennis, hockey, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, body building, MMA or any other sport, they seem to all start off with the same first few words.

Before we even get into a discussion about what the problem is they’re calling about, I interrupt. And if you call, I’ll do the same with you!
Not because I’m being rude, but the Coaching / Sports Hypnosis starts during the initial contact, usually within the first 2 – 3 minutes, if not sooner.
Here’s how the conversation continues:

Coach – “YOUR problem?” I ask with an incredulous tone of voice.

Athlete – Usually says something like “What? Uh yeah, my problem is.”
Coach -- Before they get out another word, I interrupt again, “I don’t understand. Why would you be telling me about something you want to keep? I thought you were calling for Sports Hypnosis and wanted some help from me”

Athlete – A little bewildered, “Keep? No, I don’t want to keep it. And I was calling you for Sports Hypnosis so you could help me get rid of my problem.”

Another Alpha Edge for Athletes -- "Yeah / Ummmph" or "Bigger / Stronger"???

“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” -Marcus Aurelius AD 121-180)

Have you ever been in a gym and heard lots of grunts and groans, especially from the guys (and some ladies too) who are really serious about lifting weights?  What’s all that noise about?
Let me give you another tool I teach my Athletes during their Sports Hypnosis sessions with me. During a workout, when you really want to build your stamina and endurance and make the workout even better, talk to yourself – but in a special way.

Let’s pretend you’re lifting weights. And with each upward move you say “Bigger” and each downward move “Stronger”. Maybe you misunderstood when I said “say”. I don’t mean like a wimpy “bigger”. I mean a real “BIGGER!!!”
Do you have to do it out loud? Sure, why not? Are you really that worried about what someone else will think? If you are, can you scream in your head? You can – either way, whichever suits you best. When possible, I would suggest doing it out loud – VERY LOUD!

But I know some of you are thinking “what will other people think?” or one of my Athletes pointed out to me that by saying it out loud, maybe other Athletes would start doing it too and improving.

OK – if they’re on the same team and it’ll get you closer to a Super Bowl if you play football or hockey players might want to win the Stanley Cup, then it might be worth it.  If it’s your high school or college teammates, why not share something that will help the team?
But here’s what you’ll have that they don’t. You’ll know why you’re doing it and you’ll be using that as only one tool in your mental toolbox to begin to change any negative self talk to powerful, Positive Self Talk.

And a very important aspect of this tool – when you’re saying it, in your mind see / feel yourself as BIGGER and STRONGER!
You may be wondering how I came up with that. One of my professional Athletes invited me over to his home to visit and do a Hypnosis session with him there. To continue reading, please go to:

Sports Hypnosis -- Bears, Sleep, and Athletes. What’s the Connection?

“The greatest achievements
were at first
and for a time dreams.
The oak sleeps in the acorn.”
James Allen

What’s the connection between Athletes and Bears?  Bears instinctively know how to sleep!  As do most animals of course.  They know how to turn off the worry button, or just the active mind.

Bears hibernate.  Now we’re not going to hibernate like bears, but an Athlete needs to be able to get a great night’s sleep to restore energy, and to allow both the body and the mind to relax and restore.

If the body is not relaxed properly and given a chance to rest, then the Athlete is not going to be able to maximize their ability to play their sport.  And every Athlete has dreams and goals and want to be recognized for their achievements.  Without the ability to get a good restful Sleep, those dreams and goals are going to be much more difficult to achieve!  And Sports Hypnosis can help the Athlete to drift off to sleep and get a good night's sleep.

It doesn’t matter whether you play or participate in:
golf
hockey
football
baseball
basketball
soccer
martial arts
body building
or any other sport
You need to be properly rested – especially before a major tournament or sporting event!  If you’re not properly rested – physically and mentally – then you’re not going to be giving your best sports performance.

And if an Athlete’s mind is not allowed some down time to process the daily stress, then the Athlete is not going to be as mentally sharp as needed to play their best either.  Lack of sleep will interfere with an Athlete’s ability to Focus.

The biggest problems Athletes tell me about sleep is they have trouble turning their mind off.  About the time they’re ready to go to sleep, they begin to think about practice, the next game, the next big test, their girlfriend / boyfriend, how early they have to get up, paying bills – so many things that just keeps them awake!

And what does the Athlete ask him/herself when sleep just won’t come?

An Imaginary Interview with Tony Romo – Cowboys Quarterback and part time Golfer.

Success in golf has a lot to do with being able to perform consistently at the highest level.  This requires great mental strength and self-belief that if you do hit a bad patch you can quickly get back on track.  Alongside working on my technique, I try to spend plenty of time developing the right mental state of mind for competition.”
Ross Fisher team member of 2010 winning Ryder Cup team

OK, here’s me, Coach William C. Smith at a Dallas Cowboy game in 2009.  And no that’s not Tony Romo, but at least I got a fun picture with a “Cowboy” Star Wars soldier!
As you know, I’m a Sports Hypnotist in the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex and Tony Romo is quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. I haven’t met Tony yet, but if you know him and want to see him do better in either football, or golf, feel free to give him my information. This is an imaginary interview with Tony Romo, but read it and you’ll find some useful ideas that can help you – regardless of your sport, age, or skill level.

Coach William – Tony, first of all, congratulations on your marriage. I’m sure you just disappointed a lot of women by taking your name off the bachelor list here in Dallas.

Tony Romo – Thanks Coach. Playing the field finally got old. I think this will help me be more focused for the next season.

Coach – Speaking of focus. I understand your golf focus needs a little work.

Tony – As you know, I play a lot of golf in the off season. It helps me relax and I just enjoy being outdoors and the competition.

Coach – Who’s your competition when you’re playing golf?

Tony – (Starts naming some names of other golfers and other athletes)

Coach – Well, there’s a big part of the problem!

Tony – My problem?

It Starts with a Dream! Using Sports Performance Hypnosis / NLP for Success

"Life takes on meaning
when you become motivated,
set goals and charge after
them in an unstoppable manner."
Les Brown

It starts with a Dream
A Dream becomes a Goal
To get to the Goal, develop a Plan
And then work the Plan
And adjust the Plan as needed to Achieve the Goal
And that makes the Dream – Reality.

Every successful Athlete has Goals. Do you? If not, why not? Are they important? Yes, in fact, they’re just down right essential if you really want to be successful.

But here’s something a lot of people don’t know – Goals have to start with a Dream!.Not the kind of dream you have at night while you’re sleeping, although you may find yourself “night dreaming” about them.

I’m talking about the kind of Dreams that causes you to look ahead and see and feel yourself being the Athlete you want and deserve to be.

Some obvious Dreams:
· Football players dream of winning the Super Bowl
· Baseball players – World Series
· Hockey – the Stanley Cup
· Basketball – NBA Championships
· Golf – Masters Tournament
· Tennis – Wimbledon
· Soccer – World Cup
· Body Building – Mr. (or Miss) Universe

."What keeps me going is goals."
Muhammad Ali

Those are all wonderful and exciting, but the goal has to be achievable to be believable. And it has to be believable to be effective. Rarely can those “super goals” be achieved without many smaller goals in between.

How will Sports Hypnosis/ NLP help you achieve your Goals?

Can Sports Hypnosis help prevent Sports Injuries?

"The secret of health for both mind and body
is not to mourn for the past,
not to worry about the future,
or not to anticipate troubles,
but to live in the present moment
wisely and earnestly."
The Buddha

A couple of years ago, I worked with a college football player. He wanted to get the advantage Sports Performance Hypnosis would help him with his sport.

We did some work for focus and confidence, but one area he especially wanted work with was the fear that he would be reinjured.

The previous year, he had been out most of the season with an injury and since then, he was overly cautious about any injury that would keep him from playing.  It was making him miserable.  He was very unhappy!

Now naturally, being overly cautious would not allow him to play the aggressive way a football player, or an athlete for that matter, should play their sport.

He was all stressed out and having trouble sleeping.  And if an athlete doesn’t get adequate sleep, they can’t play their best!  The body and mind needs that restorative sleep to be able to have the energy to perform.

His college Football Coach recommended Hypnosis to help him reduce stress and to sleep better.

When he contacted me and found out I did Sports Performance Hypnosis he was very excited! Tackle the worry monster and increase focus and confidence using Hypnosis together would be ideal!

It didn’t take long for him to realize he was in the right place!

He even got to the point that he was concerned about non-injury health related issues were worrying him. He was concerned about his heartbeat. He worried that a headache could be the sign of a brain tumor.  He thought a cold was the beginning of the flu, which of course would turn into pneumonia, which would lead to his death.

SPORTS HYPNOSIS – The Mental Advantage Competitors Hope You Never Discover!

“Baseball is ninety percent mental
and the other half is physical"
Yogi Berra

Let’s start with a few questions.

How old was Joe Montana when he won his first Super Bowl? You probably think you know. And would probably bet money on it. Wouldn’t you? Don’t put the money down yet. The answer will be towards the end of this article – the real answer that is.

How old were you when you reached the height of your success or will be when you do? Whether it’s business, football, hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf or whatever – think about that question for a few moments.

How much of your game / sport is physical?

And how much is mental?.

Most athletes tell me their sport is at least 50% mental. But how much of your time is spent doing mental practice? And how much physical?

The difference between an elite athlete and one just one notch down the ladder is just one step. The elite athlete spent more time on the mental game than the one on the next level down.

Athletes have a sports coach and many use personal trainers for the physical. But how many utilize a Coach to help them with the mental game?

Only the ones who really want to be on top of their game. The ones who really want to move to the next level above their teammates and opponents.

And in this article, I want to teach you some of the techniques I use with my athletes during individual or group sessions when I’m working with them to help them reach their sports goals.

“Be careful of the words you use
and the questions you ask yourself,
because your SubConscious is listening!”
William C. Smith

Now let me ask you another question. Think about it before you answer. Are you ready? Who is your competition? Write it down.
