Three Little Words that Keep an Athlete from Confident Sports Performance

"The significant
problems we face
cannot be solved
at the same level
of thinking
we were at
when we
created them."

Albert Einstein

It amazes me how many athletes call me to discuss Sports Hypnosis and the conversation starts off with, “Coach, my problem is.” Or “Coach, I have a problem!”
It doesn’t matter whether it's’ for golf, tennis, hockey, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, body building, MMA or any other sport, they seem to all start off with the same first few words.

Before we even get into a discussion about what the problem is they’re calling about, I interrupt. And if you call, I’ll do the same with you!
Not because I’m being rude, but the Coaching / Sports Hypnosis starts during the initial contact, usually within the first 2 – 3 minutes, if not sooner.
Here’s how the conversation continues:

Coach – “YOUR problem?” I ask with an incredulous tone of voice.

Athlete – Usually says something like “What? Uh yeah, my problem is.”
Coach -- Before they get out another word, I interrupt again, “I don’t understand. Why would you be telling me about something you want to keep? I thought you were calling for Sports Hypnosis and wanted some help from me”

Athlete – A little bewildered, “Keep? No, I don’t want to keep it. And I was calling you for Sports Hypnosis so you could help me get rid of my problem.”

Using Hypnosis to Help a Baseball Player Stop Wetting His Bed.

No matter how good you are,
you're going to lose
one-third of your games.
No matter how bad you are
you're going to win
one-third of your games.
It's the other third
that makes the difference.”
Tommy Lasorda

First thing to realize, he’s probably embarrassed to be talking about it anyway.  Facing the embarrassment of the thought that his teammates may tease him and his friends might make fun of him. And it took courage for him to consider Hypnosis for help with this problem.

Now, let’s talk about Blaine, a young athlete, the bed wetting baseball player and how Hypnosis helped him. Blaine is nine years old. He loves baseball! He would love to go to sports camps and spend nights at his friend’s house, but can’t. He’s afraid he’ll be embarrassed the next morning.

His Mother called me and asked if I could help him using Hypnosis. She liked the way I explained how we would be working on SELF TALK, Self Hypnosis, and CONFIDENCE in all areas to help Blaine move beyond this problem. I asked her to make a sentence, using the word “problem” in it to tell me what we would be working with.

She said, “Blaine’s problem is he wets his bed.” I suggested, “instead of saying ‘Blaine’s’ problem, how about saying ‘THE’ PROBLEM. I helped her understand that when she said “Blaine’s problem” she was making it more difficult for him to get past the problem.

Why would this make it more difficult?  Simple logic!  When we say ‘my problem’ we’re saying it belongs to us. Anything that ‘belongs’ to us, the SubConscious Mind wants to keep and get more of.

SPORTS HYPNOSIS – The Mental Advantage Competitors Hope You Never Discover!

“Baseball is ninety percent mental
and the other half is physical"
Yogi Berra

Let’s start with a few questions.

How old was Joe Montana when he won his first Super Bowl? You probably think you know. And would probably bet money on it. Wouldn’t you? Don’t put the money down yet. The answer will be towards the end of this article – the real answer that is.

How old were you when you reached the height of your success or will be when you do? Whether it’s business, football, hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf or whatever – think about that question for a few moments.

How much of your game / sport is physical?

And how much is mental?.

Most athletes tell me their sport is at least 50% mental. But how much of your time is spent doing mental practice? And how much physical?

The difference between an elite athlete and one just one notch down the ladder is just one step. The elite athlete spent more time on the mental game than the one on the next level down.

Athletes have a sports coach and many use personal trainers for the physical. But how many utilize a Coach to help them with the mental game?

Only the ones who really want to be on top of their game. The ones who really want to move to the next level above their teammates and opponents.

And in this article, I want to teach you some of the techniques I use with my athletes during individual or group sessions when I’m working with them to help them reach their sports goals.

“Be careful of the words you use
and the questions you ask yourself,
because your SubConscious is listening!”
William C. Smith

Now let me ask you another question. Think about it before you answer. Are you ready? Who is your competition? Write it down.
